A taster for your journey across the Ultraviolet Grasslands to the Black City |
My latest read is the 78 page taster for The Ultraviolet Grasslands, "a psychedelic RPG Crawl" created by Luka Rejec, author of the excellent Witchburner and illustrator of multiple other supplements. It's free to download at Drivethru RPG.
The setting is very rules light (but uses D&D tropes) and could easily be run with a variety of systems. The author describes it as a cross between psychedelic heavy metal, the Dying Earth (Jack Vance) and the Oregon Trail game and he succeeds at delivering that experience. Players take the part of members of a caravan travelling from the Violet City (ruled by cats) to the Black City at the end of the world. It's a point crawl, between a network of nodes and there are light rules for market research, trade and logistics. The encounter tables and factions are evocative, and the Violet City - the start of the journey - is described in more detail. Types of caravan are covered, along with motivations to travel. There's enough here for a GM to build an campaign from, but the more detailed, expanded book (~200 pages) would help as it provides more information on destinations and much more.
This is excellent, and I'm hungry for the full version. The hardback is out of print, but they're preordering a softback version. I secured a slightly scuffed copy of the hardback, which I'm waiting to arrive.
I printed the PDF via Doxdirect and it looks great.
