The One Ring |
I love this game! Dr Mitch has crafted a fantastic experience which makes us all feel really invested in the outcome for our fellowship. We have reached the point where our characters are known heroes, recognised both by our own people and the other folk. The games can revolve around combat or diplomacy, and travel is an ever-present challenge. It is great that those of us who are Tolkien fans of old can be as excited as those who have no real knowledge of the stories.
(Minor spoilers after the break)
Our season opened with a celebration for the opening of the Old Forest Road by the Dwarves, at the renovated Old Watchtower which we had re-opened early in our career. We had travelled there from Rivendell, slightly perturbed by the realisation that we would soon have to find a way to challenge the rising threat of the Nazgûl at Dol Guldur. A prophecy of the deaths of the Woodsmen Lords Ingomer and Ingold also disturbed our thoughts. That said, the chance of a fine celebration brightened us. Sadly, someone had poisoned the wine that was sent as a gift from the Wood Elf King, and we only just managed to avoid a major diplomatic incident. As we cleared that up, messengers brought news that Ingold was under attack from Uruks and a wraith; we rushed to save him along with many of the revellers. A bloody battle was fought, with the enemy vanquished and Aeldra dispatching her second Ringwraith. We were all injured, with two of the party knocked out at different stages of the battle.
The party sent word to the Elven King and the King under the Mountain, and set off after recuperating. The second session revolved around twin diplomatic missions; Aledra the Woodswoman (Elina) and Nali the Dwarf (me) met with King Dain to persuade him to commit forces against the shadow in the spring. Miriel the Wood Elf (Jag) and Nolwë of Rivendell (Simon) sought to root out the traitor and get Thranduil to commit the Elves. After stirring speeches, rational arguments, song and the intimidating awe of the firstborn, both kings committed to the Alliance. The traitor was found, dead, in the forest having drunk from the enchanted stream. However, there was enough evidence to show that the last of the Giant Spiders of Mirkwood was conspiring against the free people to mean that we would have to face down the one that got away, Sarquin.
Next week, we go in search of a beardless dwarf who may yet reveal secrets that will help us in our missions.
Assuming that we survive Sarquin, our campaign will climax with a final season where the Alliance moves on Dol Guldor.
