Traveller - First Impressions - Dice and Cards from FFE

A photo of two dice sets for Traveller5. One set is in a box and has 10 black, 1 red, 1 yellow and 1 white six-sided die in the box tray. The numbers are embossed into it and have an Imperial sunburst surrounding them. There are 5 dice in the second group, all of similar design except a white die that has a green sunburst. The second group has 2 black, 2 white and 1 red dice. Below the dice is a black credit card sized card with a patent of nobility of the Duke of Lanth, an in-game location in Charted Space.

Running Traveller at TravCon reminded me how much I liked the 18mm dice that Marc Miller created for the Traveller5 line, so I decided to check if they were still available. I was delighted that they were (you can find them on the FarFuture Enterprises Website) so I ordered a set, and also some of the T-Cards that have been created as sparks for ideas.

They arrived quickly, taking less than ten days to travel between the USA and the UK (so a quick trip to 100 diameters, then a jump and vectoring back in), and I'm really pleased with them. They've nice heft to them, look good and feel good in use. The dice have the Imperial sunburst embossed on them.

A photo of the Traveller5 T-Card set. There are two 52-card decks marked as "T-Cards" with a deck number and the "Game Resource Cards for Traveller". T-cards is in an Imperial Sunburst and the FFE logo is below. The box they came from contains an advert for "Agent of the Imperium", showing a space-suited figure. Below the cards and box are a set of 6 cards for 'Trader's Guild Members' which have character statistics and skills, and include clones and synths. Finally, there is a black card which is a Traveller5 patent of nobility for the Barony of Overnale in the Spinward Marches.

The T-Cards are two sets of standard 52-card decks which contain images to spark ideas for the Referee. The box that they came in included an advert for Marc Miller's "Agent of the Imperium" novel, plus six assorted characters with Traveller5 statistics (but they could easily be used for other editions with little modifications) and another patent of nobility, this time for the Barony of Overnale in the Spinward Marches.

A photo of example T-Cards, arranged in two rows of five. From the top row, left-to-right: a map of the Spinward Main; a planetary map of Sheyou; an image of Arden, a borderline independent polity; an image and details of Pequan with teasers for plots; the astrogator's secret - a way to replicate jump duration. The second row (again left-to-right) has the following: An image of the hellworld Zivije, where workers are oppressed for profit; a TL13 StapleGun (advanced snub accelerator pistol); a Vargr Pirate ship; the Vilani alphabet; a Starburst for Extreme Heroism (the Imperium's highest award for valour).

There's quite a selection in the cards, ranging from planetary maps and images, to sector maps, secret, weapons, ships awards and cultural items. Several of them gave me little sparks of ideas for scenarios which I may follow up, which is the whole point. The equipment has Traveller5 stats, but could easily be used with other editions. I'm not certain how much use I will get from them, but they're certainly nice artefacts.

Overall, I'm really pleased with the dice and cards here; I'll definitely get more use from the dice, but both sets of items are lovely.
